Hello! I had RNY surgery on 12/19/19. I am recovering very well!! ...was even eating goood amounts of broth and protein shakes while at the hospital. I’m nervous and frustrated because of a few things:
  1. I’m hangry! I feel like I can eat more than liquids. This makes me nervous because others that I know personally that had the same surgery said they couldn’t even think of food this early after surgery...they had absolutely no appetite for weeks. Me on the other hand, could really go for something more solid & crunchy. Is that normal so soon?
  2. Most of the protein or liquids I can consume now are all sweet vs. savory....SF fruit popsicles, chocolate protein, lime SF jello, strawberry yogurt...I’m sick of it!! Thank goodness for broth and soups...but most of the things I am allowed to eat are fruity, chocolatey, ...sweet. Anyone work around this?
Thanks all!!!

At almost 2 weeks out, which is where you are, I was definitely getting hungry on the liquid diet! I always felt ready to transition earlier than i was allowed to! I stuck to drs orders though because I knew the wait was for healing purposes. It will be worth it but I know it's hard!
For the savory, it will be easier in a few days when you can add cream of wheat, I made mine with high protein milk. That's kind of savory :)

Never forget, hunger pains can also be your bodies response to dehydration. If you feel hungry drink till you are full from water. If 15 min later you feel hungry again go for the protein. Thirst is one of the number one things to get under control this early.

Slow and Steady Trust The Process and Congratulations and Welcome!!!

Does anyone else take a bite of something to taste it, but spit it out and not swallow it? I cook a lot for my family and want to check my dishes or baked items for flavor without sacrificing my stomach with added breads/carbs at this early stage post op. ....I feel like I’m on the verge of an eating disorder!

Typically, I will have a family member try the dish themselves to see what they think. My sister is very suspicious of anything that I say tastes good because she no longer trusts my taste buds ;) One night we did a sibling dinner and it was mexican themed. She brought queso from a restaurant that I love and I couldn't eat the chips but I wanted to sample the queso. I stuck a spoon in and just tasted it that way. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if they had changed the recipe because this taste was super spicy! Since then, no one trusts me when I tell them something is good. So I will have someone try whatever it is I'm making (if I can't eat it) and do the best I can with the descriptions they give me.

Hehe, funny that they don't trust your tastes anymore. :p
