Just thinking....

2 weeks before my VSG I was on a liquid diet. Broth, protein shakes, sugar free jello then 2 post op same thing it was awful. But I know it was for the greater good to prepare me for post op.

hi everyone! I just was sitting here thinking!! What is the diet like for 2 weeks before surgery???? Like what can you have not have?
All surgeons and nutritionists they work with are totally different! I was told to eat low (virtually no) carb and high protein starting at my first appt. I had 2 months to loose 10% of my body weight to do this so there was no "2 week" diet for me. Once I hit goal, I was scheduled. I actually even regained about 3 pounds in the last week waiting on my surgery. Do NOT do that. Surgeon wasn't upset or anything but it just made me disappointed in myself.

I did not have a super restrictive 2 weeks pre-op diet. But, I think that the diet depends on personal factors as well - if someone has a fatty liver, they may have a more restrictive diet to shrink it more, where someone that is on the cusp of the BMI but has co-morbidities allowing for surgery may not.

I have been given my diet list but I don't start until the elective surgeries can be scheduled again. Comparing my diet with those on the board, I think I got off really easy. Breakfast and lunch are high protein liquid supplement (Clear, protein shake or the like) and one serving of fruit if I'm still hungry. Dinner is 4 oz lean protein and veggies if needed to fill me up. Snacks for anytime are veggies. I know I'll have hunger, cravings and general h-angry feelings but all in all I think it won't be a bad two weeks.

That's great, it doesn't sound like your doctor is being super-harsh. These are all things you'll need to start incorporating anyway. :)

Very true. I also got my "diet for life". Now I am officially nervous. Can I really do this? I've spent 72 years (minus all the dieting times) eating what I want, when I want and as much as I want. Seeing what I will be eating from now on (of course, my luck it will only be 10 more years... :) ) was like a slap in the face. It just makes me admire all of you more than I already do.

You've got this! If we can do it, you can. Believe me, I loved eating whatever I wanted but I'm so much happier now :)

I agree with Brenda! I do eat whatever I want, I just want different things now. Not that there are not times that I want something unhealthy, but they are fewer and farther between. But even on the rare occasion that I do allow for something out of the norm, I don't eat the volume I once did. For example, I am able to have a bite of some dessert my husband ordered and be completely (and genuinely) satisfied by the taste.

Diane, I'd be glad to....

Stage 4 (All Textures as Tolerated) This will be your maintenance stage for life.
  • Reintroduce new foods and food textures as tolerated
  • 3 meals consisting of 2-4 oz protein foods and 1/4-1/2 cup fruit, vegetables, or starch
  • Limit food to 1/2 - 1 cup per meal
  • 1 - 2 servings of dairy (milk or yogurt) between meals
  • You may discontinue protein supplements when you are able to meet your protein goal with food
  • Consume sugar-free/non-carbonated liquids throughout the day (goal 64 oz daily)

In previous stages we learned about small bites, chew well, no drinks with meals & 30 min before and after, at least 30 minutes to eat each meal, etc. Also what causes dumping, stomach pain, etc.

I’m going to be in quite the pickle when I start my pre op diet. I have fatty liver, but my BMI is also on the lower side, so I can’t lose 10 more pounds or I’ll disqualify myself. I don’t have any comorbid conditions that would allow for surgery at a lower BMI, so I have to be careful.

just make sure you tell that exactly to your surgical team.
They know, and what’s funny is the woman in charge of dealing with my insurance said she’ll let me know if I’m getting close to disqualify. I asked her if she was going to tell me to go eat a donut. She just laughed and said, well, maybe ;) She’s a really wonderful lady, and I love how she goes to bat for all the patients.

That's great you have her support like that! Hell, I'm sure if you drank a gallon of water right before your next weigh-in, you could get on the scale and then run to the ladies room! I think a gallon is about 8lbs.

For my first appointment, I wanted a little extra buffer, so I ate Chinese food the weekend before, which I am not afraid to admit I am a dumpling binger LOL and drank SO much water. I was definitely a few pounds heavier with water weight.

Has anyone heard of a 3 week pre-op with all liquids (shakes, jello and such) and the only add on is certain raw vegetables? It seems extreme to me considering what all your posts have said. I think I will call my doctors office next week just to see what their status is.

That does sound extreme to me. Especially three weeks. Yeah, I'd call them to see where things are.

I agree with Brenda and El. You will be able to eat many things (after a time) but by that time, what you want will probably change. I was the pickiest eater before surgery. I was not a fan of eggs, veggies, and most fruits along with many other items. When I would eat a taco salad, it was the shell/chips, meat, beans, sour cream, cheese, more cheese, and taco sauce. Crazily enough, that has all changed now. I crave veggies! One of my favorite lunches now is a cool ranch veggie pizza - 1/2 tomato basil tortilla with a light spread of onion and chive cream cheese/lite sour cream/ranch seasoning and then topped with ALL the veggies - cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, sweet peppers, cauliflower and black olives. I then add a few turkey bacon bits and a sprinkling of shredded cheese. I never would have gone near that prior to surgery. It is crazy how much my tastes have changed. I still want something not quite healthy occasionally, but because of the change in my eating habits, I can clearly hear my body tell me eating the bad things is not going to sit well. My stomach gurgles, it feels like the energy I have just quickly evacuates my body, and I become very sluggish. Knowing what it does to me, I tend to not want the bad things any more. Sticking to the change in eating habits for the first couple of months after surgery will make all of the difference in retraining your body to crave what will make it feel good instead of what will make your eating disorder feel good.

I know two weeks is typical, but I know we have had a couple of members that have had to do 4 week diets before surgery. Again, every dr is different and they have reasons for their requirements. To them, it is a true and tested pre-req that hasn't steered them wrong so they don't see any way to change it.

Thanks for the input.
