So I went out to eat at a restaurant for the first time in a month or so since my surgery and ordered scrambled eggs with a couple of sausage patties .I only ate half the eggs ( there were 2 ) and a sausage patty and took the rest home for which I probably can have at least two or three breakfasts this week. What I’m kinda bummed out about is theres not much on menus you can have.(While i have been looking online at restaurant menus) when going out like I said to Disneyland,Chicago,Vegas or wherever it’s kinda embarrassing asking to order off a kids menu or asking if they can remove some of the food from the order. I guess that’s what comes with the surgery and I know I can’t over eat anymore without dumping but not getting to eat the things I used too is kind of a bummer.Im glad I had the surgery though cause I’m starting to look a lot better and I guess I’ll be able to eat my favorite foods later but that’s going to be awhile.

I forgot I also had a cup of chilli with a couple of pieces of cornbread at the casino yesterday and my stomach felt awe full all day even though I was winning inside I felt like vomiting the whole time even though i didn’t

My surgeon gives you a card to give to the waiter waitress as soon as you get to the restaurant, asking that you be allowed to order from the kids menu. He explains that you are a patient who has had gastric bypass and that you're incapable of eating more than a few ounces of food. Then he signed it and I laminated it and I carry it in my wallet at all times.
Most restaurants ignore our card I order ask for a second plate put the rest in a take home container and eat what I’m allowed I try not to bring attention to me and just do it that way. The card never worked for me. I also will go out with my husband and just eat off his plate saves a lot of money! Hope this helps just fish out what you can eat and take the rest home

I waste a lot of food but I still enjoy eating out. I do it at least weekly. You'll enjoy it again in a couple months once you don't have as many dietary restrictions.

Since I get full on much less, I'm a lot more adventurous and order things I never would have when I was eating to fill my old stomach.

I've never ordered off the kid's menu, just have leftovers wrapped up. A lot of time sending it home with the person I'm with. If not, I may pick at it the next day... or not. I think about it this way - would I have paid anything to be my size? ABSOLUTELY! :) Plus it's the experience of getting out with a friend that you're paying for, not the food.

I feel for you. I'm only in my pre-op liquid diet and have been mourning over not eating regular food. In my mind now, I miss the massive volume eating when I think of foods I want to eat. However, I know my appetite and capacity will greatly change. I'm allowing myself to feel those feelings and acknowledge the thoughts, so I can let them go, with "It's OK to feel that way. That doesn't change your new way of eating."

Yeah I have that card . There was nothing on the kids meal that I wanted .

That is what I have been noticing too. Although it is funny, because before surgery I was such a picky eater that the kids menu called to me most of the time. But now I want all the veggies and fruits to be in everything I eat. My taste buds have changed so much that every time I eat out it is an adventure in new foods. I usually try and get something that has grilled chicken and whatever extras go with it. Don't be afraid to ask for a dish without items. Because we are limited on what we can have, it is the only way to get food that you truly enjoy. I also will occasionally get sweet potato fries. Since I know their condiments have sugar in them, I will ask for a side of ranch and a small shot of milk. I mix the two in a bowl and use that as my dipping sauce. Tastes amazing without the worry of dumping afterwards. It is completely a trial and error type of thing.

I was wondering about sweet potato fries .The restaurant I went to last night didn’t have them though.I did ask that they remove the potatoes from my order which they did .

My first brunch since surgery. I had a turkey quiche eat about 4 slow bits and was done. Brought the rest home and when ever I got hungry during the rest of the day a piece would go in the microwave. Lasted me all day.

I did not go out to eat for a good 4-5 months post-op. But you aren't alone. I remember bursting out in tears when I made scrambled eggs for the first time, and couldn't eat it all. It's a horrible feeling. It's like wanting to talk to a loved one who's no longer with us. You are grieving your previous way of life. Food and eating gave you comfort. And you don't have that anymore. But you will soon find that you will have so much more comfort in things you didn't previously. Things like:
  • Not automatically being the biggest person in a room.
  • Not having to shop in the big and tall sections (unless you are tall).
  • More confidence.
  • Being better looking.
  • Being able to tie your shoes without being completely winded.
And those are just some of the things off the top of my head.

For me it’s
  • getting on a plane and not have to ask for set belt extension.
  • not to have to struggle getting my bra on
  • Hugging someone really closes.
  • being able to scratch my back.

I have found that the kids menu is generally filled with horrible food choices in most cases, there are a few exceptions (Applebee's ironically has a kids chicken taco meal that is decent). I will generally just ask if they have smaller portions, or have a senior or kids sized portion. If I am out with my hubby, I generally just share a meal. Saves money and waste.
