Measuring mix ups!

Hi all! Hope everyone is having a good week. I am 4 weeks post op today and down 30 pounds - yay!!! I have a question... that in theory is very silly but in the world of WLS is important! I love shredded chopped up chicken (currently on mushy phase). I mix it with a tbsp sugar free bbq sauce and it’s a nice warm savory dinner. Here’s the thing. I have been weighing out exactly 2oz of chicken on my food scale. Tonight all my little snack bowls I like to use were in the dishwasher so I just put my weighted out dinner in a measuring cup
to eat...and it was 4oz!!!! I do realize 2oz of chicken on the scale is different than 4 FLUID oz - but I measure food sometimes in cups and sometimes on the scale and I am worried I’m messing up my macros. Now I’m like, what’s accurate?! What do you guys favor for measuring solid foods? Thanks in advance!

Congrats Anne on losing 30 lbs! I weigh my meat on a scale but other things in measuring cups. If you google what you are eating, for example "Chicken grilled calories", it will tell not only tell you the calories but also tell you the measurement. If it is in ounces, put it on a scale but if it says 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup then use your measuring cups. You are most likely doing it correct without thinking about it, but when in doubt check the internet. I wouldn't worry too much about it because 1) you are losing and 2) if you are drastically off in your measurements I think your new tool will tell you otherwise!

It's based on volume, not weight, so says my dietician. I asked her the same question when I was eating purees. I suspect you'll get advice that is different, but I trust my RD. I wouldn't worry too much about a mistake with macros, a misstep here or there isn't going to make a difference at this point, especially with such low calories per day.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - all makes total sense. You are all correct, I don’t think I have done any harm (even with everything measured I still stop if I’m full...even if it’s one bite left I put it in the fridge lol) - I was worried about long term more calories /volume playing a role over time. I have my second post op with my dietician next week so i will ask then as well especially because I think she will be advancing me to stage 4. Wazzu if I think about it, volume over weight makes sense when it comes to a smaller stomach (I’m RNY). I am so grateful for this awesome community. Y’all are the best!
