Medical issues and gaining

I'm 9 years out from surgery. In 2023, I started having medical issues (not related to bariatric surgery) that cause me pain and prevents me from exercising like I used to. Because of this, I've started gaining weight. Before I was maintaining at less than 10 lb from my goal weight, now I'm more than 20 lb over my goal and gaining.

I snack too much and eat when I'm not hungry in the evenings, which has been a problem for years, but before I was able to exercise and maintain. Now, it's hard to push through the pain and exercise more. I can still walk, just not rigorously nor hike. Yoga might be too much. I'll start swimming class 2x a week starting next week. But I need to push through the pain and use my Oculus to exercise more (Supernatural is terrific!) and find time to walk more often. Could use support.

I have slacked off on exercise since its cold outside. I prefer to walk or ride my bike outside. I was taking zumba and cardio drumming classes but have not been consistent with it.

I'm not sure pushing through pain is medically ideal. Have you spoken with your doctors? Swimming is a great low impact exercise. The elliptical machine is also low impact, and not as bad on your joints as the treadmill etc.

I can commit to 3 workouts per week, if you want to buddy up and do a weekly check in?

I don't know what Oculus and Supernatural are. I think if people use brand names or abbreviations, it would be nice to explain them. But for sure, you are supported here and we'd like to learn from you and share our experiences.

What worries me most is that you're 9 years out. To me, that says the pain and gain are NOT related to the surgery and you should get to a doctor or initial care as soon as possible. It is NOT normal to live with pain, but a doctor can run tests to isolate whatever the problem is.

My doctor stated that I wouldn't cause any worse damage by exercising and that I can do as much as I can tolerate. They say yoga might be good for me and that I should try it. I'm not sure how much I believe that. I'm going to see a specialist next week.

I would love to buddy up with you and check in on exercising. How do we do that exactly? I'm new to using this site, so if I don't respond to you, just nudge me again. I'm aiming for three to four days minimum.

Just asked; I have no problem explaining terms I've used. The Oculus is virtual reality gaming console by Meta (formallyFacebook). And Supernatural is an exercise game you can play using the Oculus.

My medical issues aren't related to the bariatric surgery. In April 2023, I had a large liver cyst which was causing major pain and it had to be removed. I still have two cysts inside of my liver, which they're keeping watch on but still cause pain. After the procedure for the large liver cyat, I was having more intense back pain than normally. My general doctor thinks that the procedure for removing the cyst caused more damage to my back just from being on my back during it. I'm going to see a spine specialist next week.

Hi Missy (if that's what you go by), I walked with friends yesterday, just over 2 miles. Not strenuous, but it was enough for me.

I was to start my swimming class today, but it was just orientation. I start on Thursday. Looking forward to that. I didn't exercise today but I did it more walking than expected, so it was something.

Have you been exercising, or have any plans to?

I am stuck home as it has been below 0 for days. I did do a little bit of weights and I've been trying to do a few exercises every time I get out of my chair. So, not really lol

I am going to try to get a workout in today. Next week I am in Florida, so you won't hear from me.

Good on you for starting so quickly! I'll get a workout in today! The Y has a Zumba class at 11:00! If I can't make that, I'll have to pop in my old Sweating to the oldies DVD lol

Lol! I'm glad you all made it through alive! I'm also glad that you got some exercise in, even if not as much as you wanted to. I walked again with a friend about two miles. I was very busy today and also had physical therapy with new therapists. They nearly did me in, making me hurt so much more than when I got there! And it wasn't their intention. I'll let them know that next time.

Well, I have my first lap swimming class tomorrow. Wish me luck!
