Hi! I'm Courtney.
My journey really started in 2021 when I lost my dad. After that, my weight began climbing quickly. Before I knew it, I had reached nearly 300 pounds. My diabetes was poorly controlled, and mentally I was at one of the lowest points of my life.
In July 2024, I finally decided it was time to take control of my health again. I started using an insulin pump to better manage my diabetes. Within two months, my numbers improved significantly and I started feeling better than I had in a long time.
Around that same time, I had lunch with a friend who told me she would be having bariatric surgery that summer. She encouraged me to at least go talk to the clinic. I didn’t think too much about it at first, but then another friend mentioned she was also having surgery and encouraged me to look into it as well. That’s when I decided maybe it was worth exploring.
I scheduled my appointment for September 2024. The consultation went great and I was told I was a strong candidate for surgery. Because of insurance requirements, I had to complete a six-month waiting period before I could move forward. During that time, I focused on increasing my protein and preparing for surgery, and I actually lost 30 pounds during those six months.
Surgery day eventually came and went. At first, I noticed my clothes fitting differently, but it was hard for me to actually see the weight loss myself.
Now, just shy of one year later, I’m down almost 100 pounds.
I’m not quite where I want to be yet weight-wise, but the difference in my energy and mental health has been incredible. One of the biggest wins has been my diabetes. My A1C is now 5.4%, which is in the normal range.
One thing I still struggle with is getting to the gym and working out. In my mind, I still sometimes feel like I look like the same 400-pound woman, which makes me very self-conscious and hesitant to go. I do meet my protein and water goals most days, which I’m proud of.
I’ll also admit that I have a pretty serious sweet tooth , so it can be challenging at times watching others enjoy sweets around me.
If anyone has tips, advice, or encouragement, I’m always open to hearing it.
