I had the surgery last Monday, 10/6. Fairly straight forward, but went in with horrible excess acid and that did not change, even with their infusions of protonics. Esophagus just felt closed/ and or in spasm. Went home two days later not having swallowed much of anything. Week later I am not able to swallow simple pills and throat is raw and swollen. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Of course I have lost a lot of weight in a short time, but not quite how I thought. The reflux problem is huge...Anyone???????

WELCOME to the Forum!!!

Just a suggestion that you should be taking chewable or liquid vitamins. Sounds like you are having a really hard time. If you went in for the bariatric surgery with acid reflux then it's not caused from the surgery. Maybe you should consider seeing a specialist. Acid reflux can burn a hole in your esophagus. It can be a very serious problem.

Hoping you feel better soon,

The most important thing you should be doing right now is on the phone with your bariatric doctor and his team. They should be dealing with this issue directly.

Now, having said that you should know we all burp a lot after the surgery. In fact, I am now 11 months post op and every time I eat I end up burping for quite awhile after the meal. That is the nature of the beast. It is not "acid reflux" necessarily. You have to think of yourself as a baby. What happens with a baby when they have their bottle? You have to burp them. Why? They are small. Their stomach is small. Air gets trapped and it has to get out.

I find that veggies make me very gassy. I cannot have scrambled eggs since there is too much air trapped in the scrambling of the egg for me.

I am already taking 40mg (Rx dosage) of Pepcid and I am now also taking a daily Prilosec. So it isn't acid reflux.

Best wishes.

Again, talk to your doctor until they can give you a satisfactory course of action as well.

You may also be eating much too quickly. It takes a long time for us to learn to eat very slowly.

I could be eating an egg with a piece of cheese on it for breakfast. Half way through that egg I often stop and rest for about 10 minutes or so before finishing the egg. You learn to identify the signals/feelings you have when you are getting full and/or eating too quickly. The burping for me starts up real quick if I eat too fast. It also starts to happen as I approach being full; so I stop.
