Hi I'm new here. I have gastric bypass 05-03-2010. I started at 289.50 and am now at 133. I did actually get down to about 124.00. I am now finding that there is external stress in my life that is causing me to eat more; thus the weight is creapy back on. Any ideas on dealing with external stress (family, aged mother and work), will be much appreciated.

Hi Marchfern, welcome to the forum and congrats on your weight loss. Dealing with external stress can be difficult. I try to get more exercise in, walking during lunch, swimming at the end of the day, etc. Another thing that helps, particularly when I'm about to eat something I shouldn't. I pull out a picture of my Grandson, he's 5, and remember what prompted me to finally take the plunge. I couldn't play with him on the floor. Find your external reason for doing this, keep something with you that reminds of that reason. It helps me. Finally there is the counseling option. Talk to someone, a good friend or a professional, but talk to someone not involved in the stresses. Sometimes just talking about it helps to relieve the stress.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I too have a grandson, 7 who is ver dear to me and having lost the weight assures that I will be around to see him grow up. I have tried the exercise ,but with work (where I sit most of the time), my family and my mother, who I care for, I find it hard to find time for myself. I am in what is called the "sandwich generation". I will follow up on your suggestion to find someone to talk with.

Marchfern-Welcome to the forum and great job on your weight loss!!! Maybe attending a live bariatric support group will help. There will be people there who are going through the same thing and can tell you what they are doing to help with the situation. I need to start going myself and intend to do so very soon. I am physically disabled and find it difficult to get into my car due to pain so I don't leave the house except when absolutely necessary. I have hip replacement and reconstruction of the pelvis scheduled for 4/2/13. Once this is done and I go to physical therapy I should be able to get into my car without having as much pain as I have right now. The first things I will be doing are attending live bariatric support group meetings, going to the gym and pool and going for daily walks. I'm very excited in anticipation of being able to exercise. I know this will jump start my metabolism and get my weight loss going again. Although I have lost more than 100 pounds I need to lose more but need to exercise on a regular basis to accomplish my goal.

If your bariatric surgeon does not provide a live support group and if you can't find another one in your area you can attend a TOPS meeting instead. This link will help you find a local TOPS meeting:
