Newbie in need of support

My name is Cindy. I had gastric bypass surgery done on 10/21/14. For awhile was doing good. Now I'm getting dehydrated, depressed, and tired of those darn protein shakes! I'm trying to get fluid in but I am always so full. I'm not even getting in every meal that I am supposed to be. Supposed to be having 3 protein meals, 2 protein shakes and 1 snack along with 6-8 glasses of water! I'm only able to get in 2 meals of 1/4 cup protein, 1 shake and doing a high protein supplement in place of the shake. Trying to get in water but usually ends up being maybe 2- 2 1/2 glasses of water. I go to bed feeling so uncomfortable at the end of the day because I'm trying to get in all that I can. Anyone have any suggestions? I knew this was going to be a hard process but you don't realize how hard until your going through it!:(

What you are experiencing is common to all of us.

Don't worry. do your best. It gets better.

The 48 to 64 ounces includes all your liquids not just the water.

Most of us are lucky to get to 48 ounces in the early months including shakes, water, and whatever else we are drinking as liquid.

Just keep sipping throughout the day.

I found that as soon as I could tolerate milk 1% I started having milk rather than water. As time goes by your consumption does increase.

I hope you aren't taking a diuretics at this point too. We all fight the dehydration in the early stages. That is why when most of us leave the hospital right after the procedure we have gained about 5 or more pounds. That is a result of the hospital knowlngly hydrating you as much as possible knowing full well you will be challenged in the first month maybe 2 to stay completely hydrated. Just make sure you aren't urinating the dark yellow. That is the true indicator. The lighter your urine is the better.

Best wishes.

Thanks dancinbr! No I'm not on a diuretic they just have me on a stool softener and if I go several days to take milk of magnesia. Surprisingly I didn't gain weight while in the hospital. Of course that might be because I was up every 15-20 minutes going to the bathroom! The center that I went to does tell me to drink all that liquid and that the 6-8 cups doesn't include the protein shakes but any other fluid yes. But when I expressed to them my difficulty getting it down they said to just do the best I can with that and the food. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Great job losing your weight!

WELCOME to the Forum, Cindy!!!

I also had a very tough time getting my liquids down for the first month or so. I felt so full all the time that I just couldn't swallow well at all. I slowly felt better after I was allowed to eat food like scrambled eggs with cheese melted on it, cottage cheese and applesauce. Two spoonfuls of food filled me up but it also seemed to encourage my desire for drinking. Just hang in there. As Dancinbr says it's a problem most of us go through but it does get better.

Looks like you are doing really well losing your weight, :) Awesome!!!

Keep up the great work!

Do your best.

It does get better.

Sounds like you are following your centers directions as best you can.

That is good.

Cindy,
What does your Doctor and his team say? I think they need to be helping you through this. I had the gastric sleeve done and have not had any problems at all really. Had it done on Oct. 13 and have dropped almost 40 lbs. so far, Still have 50 more to go.
Let us know how you are doing.
