Obesity and Asthma

Hello,

I didn't have asthma until I was in my early 40s and morbidly obese. My asthma has gotten worse and I have more asthma attacks and flare-ups as time goes by, even though I'm now back on the downward trend for weight.

Once you have your bariatric surgery, is this one of the comorbitities that gets better?

I have three indoor-only cats. The litter box I bought for them awhile back is too short and they are making a bit of a mess in the litter room (a spare bathroom). So, I bought an extra large very high litter box a few days ago. Of course, I had to find the time, gumption, and energy to completely clean out the old litter box, throw everything away out in the garbage bin, clean the room, and then set up the new one. I was not only exhausted and sweating, I ended up having an asthma attack. I was doing something I've done do many times in my life and it was too much for this 56-year-old morbidly obese girl with asthma! Ugh!

I do hope surgery and weight loss will help with the asthma.

What is asthma? Is it genetic? Is it related to other physical conditions? Can it be cured? I could look it up but I'd much rather hear from the source. We used to be awful to a kid with asthma at school. He was chubby and couldn't run far, and the teacher called him lazy and yelled at him to try harder. Of course, I now know it's a medical condition and that teacher should be whipped for his cruelty. But seriously, what is it? I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't know.

Hi,

It's easier for me to share these snips from the online community I belong to... asthma.net
If anyone decides to check this out, scroll to the very bottom. There are many more communities to join. I belong to the obesity and mental health communities, too. These are different than this support group. People still share their stories and experts share articles with us, but we just press buttons to like, support, etc ...we do not directly talk back and forth with each other. I've learned a lot in these communities. I like the polls and articles and stories. Anyway, asthma is a lung condition. Our airways swell up when we are triggered by a variety of things. For me, wildfire smoke, pollution, synthetic fragrances, smelly fertilizers and cleansers (think...store aisles), and upper respiratory infections are my biggest triggers. More and more though, too much physical exertion can cause an attack for me. Others may be triggered by weather, any exercise, stress, allergies, and the list goes on. Asthma, for me, affects my decisions about outings, playdates, etc...in the summer and fall because we deal with so many wildfires and so much pollution now. I really hope this is something that can improve post-op!
