Some Advice for a newbie

Welcome to the group May. Have you started the process yet?

I started this journey January of 2020 at a starting weight of 344. I had VSG (sleeve) and lost a total of 135 lbs. I still have a way to go but I can tell you it didn't take long for me to feel so much better, healthier and more mobile! I'm not saying it is always easy but this is something I could not achieve on my own. So I would say it was the best decision I could make.

I wish you the best of luck in your journey and if you have any specific questions, please ask.

Hello 'May' and welcome to the group. You will find lots of support & encouragement, and none of the judgmental comments from many other social media outlets.

You will not receive a substitute for sound medical advice, just comments based on our personal experiences.

Have you researched the various surgical weight loss options or reached out to any programs in your area? In the meantime, one of the healthiest options almost anyone can try is to increase your water intake to at least 64 ozs daily, and begin to wean yourself off of sodas, diet drinks, and caffeinated beverages. Water can help you feel satisfied when you are actually thirsty rather than hungry.

Making a few small changes gradually can help you prepare for possible weight loss surgery if you choose that path. Maybe try a protein shake (20-30 gms) for a snack; drinking it slowly over 15 min to 1/2 hour will give you a chance to feel a bit more satisfied than a sweet or salty carb-laden snack.

One other tip is to begin laying down your fork or spoon between bites, and chew slowly as you learn to savor each bite. It can give your brain time to feel full while you eat, instead of when you finish your meal. Those who have weight-loss surgery must take 30-45 min to eat.

Again, these are just a few things I've learned here over the past several months. Please take care, God bless, and keep in touch. You will be among caring friends here. ❤

Hi May,

Welcome to the group. You found a great group of folks for questions and support. I am still just 11 days postop so I don't have much advice.

I do believe that you need to find a bariatric team you trust and follow their advice. Everyone is different. You will see that many people here have done things differently or been told different things by their doctors. There may be reasons for the differences. Do what your doctor says, not what somebody else has done. If you trust someone enough to cut you open and mess around with your digestive system, you have to trust them enough to follow their advice.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Hi May! My advice would be to set small goals before surgery that will help you be successful post op. Wean off caffeine and carbonated drinks if you have those, start cooking dinners at home if you go out to eat a lot or get drive thru, track your calories, start drinking lots of water, experiment with different protein drinks to see what you like. Welcome to the group! Glad you found us!!

Welcome to the group! I echo the great comments above - you have found a wonderful community here. Bring a notepad with questions to your surgeon (or their team). I sometimes felt overwhelmed during visits and forgot my questions so writing them down helped! Practicing water intake, small bites, chewing well, and separating food from beverages at mealtime are all great habits to start now. Congrats on taking the first steps!

Tracking and logging food is a way to be accountable to yourself. Think about what you are eating and why. Is it boredom or stress? Is it just reg mealtime, are you really hungry? This is just a wee small part of the journey. May you find the answers you are looking for.
