something nice that someone did for me to help me on my weight loss journey

Last night, we had dinner at some friends' house, and this was the first time I had eaten with people who don't know about my WLS. I had planned what I was going to say and do if offered wine ("no thank you, water is all I want tonight"), offered more food ("thanks I am feeling fine with what I have"), asked about my small portion ("this just seems to be all I have room for right now")- and everything was good until my good friend brought a nice glass of red wine out to everyone in the group, including me and handed it to me. I suggested he give it to my daughter who was sitting next to me on the couch. She took a little sip and said, "Oh, not for me-" and I took the glass back from her and she looked me in the eye and lovingly said "and it doesn't have to be for you either". It was perfect- not judgy, just perfect. She saw exactly what I needed right in that second, no big deal, quiet, steadfast, she has got me! Reminded me that no one can make me do anything that I don't want to do, and she gave me the permission to hand the wine back and suggest that someone else would certainly be able to finish it. And the evening went on! I felt so well loved and cared for.

Please share your stories of how people have helped you!

I’m so glad that things worked out regarding the glass of wine. Your daughter saved the day! However, THIS scenario is exactly what I worry about when it comes to eating at a friend or relatives house. You go in with a “plan” and someone throws a wrench into your plan by serving everyone a glass of red wine. You handled it very well, I probably would have flubbed it up and blurted out “Good grief, I cannot drink because I had weight loss surgery!” I have a bad temper and very little patience (sigh). Maybe I’m better off staying home. LOL

Just a thought. My motto is "less is more." Try smiling, saying "no thanks," and turn to the person next to you and start chit-chatting. If the wine pourer is bold enough to ask you why, just say you might need to be the designated driver. Continue to smile (thru clenched teeth if necessary lol) and say "no thank you." You are old enough to drink, or not drink if you choose. Make your space a no bullying zone. I am a rather private person by nature and am inclined not to overshare personal info if need be. Good luck.

Ya'll are way nicer than I am. I don't like to qualify anything I say. My husband once told me I was a pale version of Madea - Tyler Perry's character. My husband said he could see me waving my gun telling whoever "the Lort is gonna be coming to get you if you don't get that shit outta my face". To be truly honest - I could see me doing that too.....
