Hubby got his surgery date!

Yay for your husband Missy! Wow you are a trooper doing the liquid with him! I need a restart after my vacation, so I think I will do liquids for breakfast and lunch and then have a small dinner. That worked for me presurgery so I don't see why it wouldn't now.
Vacations worry me. We take a lot of vacations, even just short weekends. This year we agreed to only do our big annual family vacation so I can adjust. Get into my new routine and establish new habits for my "new life". Especially before I worry about eating out and all that.

It's actually going surprisingly well. I thought it would be harder than it is. Pre-op I remember being so hungry. Now, I'd like a snack but I'm doing good. We sit down at the table together for our dinner of soup. I'd like to get him into (and me back into) the habit of only eating at the table. Sitting down to a meal, even if it's just a shake, seems to allow me to focus on enjoying my meal. And as an added bonus, gets you out of the habit of snacking elsewhere.

Vacations can be hard because you're not actually cooking your own meals. Try to choose family style restaurants, not chains. They are more likely to have food made from scratch instead of fat and sodium heavy mixes. We took a 2-week vacay and drove from San Diego back home (Chicagoland area). It can be a struggle. Avoid fast food and try to stick to healthy snacks. Most gas stations have high protein shakes and snacks now, which helps.

Rule #1 of mindful eating is sitting at the table, so that’s a great goal to have. My dietician wanted me to turn the TV off when I eat breakfast alone (everyone else is at work) but I can’t do it. The TV keeps me company, even as I sit at the table.

Side note: I had a dietician from 2016 to 2018 as part of BED treatment.

Congratulations to hubby! It's hard, but with the right mindset you will rock the liquid diet. I've been on a mostly liquid diet since Jan 10. My surgery was originally scheduled for Jan 24th. Unfortunately covid made it need to be rescheduled and the Dr kept me on my liquid diet in hopes of a hospital bed opening up sooner rather than later. I just got a call today giving me a surgery date for March 2nd. They are hoping that covid in my area will hit a downturn in hospital admissions by then.

Sorry to hear that your surgery needed to be rescheduled. I hope the March 2nd date is a go. Good luck!!

Glad you got a surgery date. Looks like omicron is finally peaking most places. Are you gonna stay on the liquid diet until your March surgery?

Well, hubby is down SEVENTEEN pounds after one week of liquid diet. Holy crap. He's got 2 more weeks to go. I am still being supportive and doing the liquid diet as well. I am down 6lbs, which makes up for the weight I gained during his 'last hurrah', plus the 3 I needed to get down to my goal weight so I'm pretty happy. Although I did cheat yesterday and eat an ounce of peanuts lol

WOW! Great job to both of you.

That's awesome Missy!!!

I know some of you have asked for a hubby update, since you have similar surgery dates/experiences. So here it is.

He is moving on to puree tomorrow and I have agreed to make mashed potatoes. I don't think he was this happy on our wedding day lol
He is down a total of 53lbs, including the 3-week pre-op diet he had to do. He is still having occasional bouts of nausea & vague discomfort that he is concerned might be acid reflux. Since he didn't have it before, he's not sure. I really hope that isn't the case already, since he's not even on food yet.

The program has really changed the rules since I had my surgery, and the general doctor has gone crazy (IMHO!!) She told him only 3 meals a day, don't eat or drink after 6pm and to avoid cheese at all costs. This is causing a bit of a problem, since he has to eat too much at one time to get his protein in and it doesn't allow adequate time for water intake. Which I believe is the cause of the nausea and discomfort.

I was told 6 small meals a day, cheese is a good source of protein, and no one mentioned anything about a deadline to eat or drink. By the SAME program!! He has been a bit resistant to taking advice from me, because we did have different surgeries and he wants to do it on his own .. except for the meal prep/cooking part lol And apparently, if you do the math (he's an engineer, we always have to do the math ) it's near impossible to eat 6 times a day, not drink for 30 minutes before and after meals, take 20-30 minutes to eat each meal, get 64 ounces of water in AND sleep in a 24-hour day. But I think I have convinced him to try it my way. It's still the same amount of protein but in smaller doses. I am hoping that will help with the nausea and discomfort, even if it is reflux. I guess we'll see.

If any of you guys had/have the nausea discomfort, I'd appreciate any tips on how you got through it. I didn't have many issues and honestly, it was a long time ago.

That is wild the guidelines created. And nothing after 6p…wow. It is great he has you there to help. I am experiencing discomfort and some nausea, but I was just told to use my zofran and the discomfort I described to them they said should reduce as healing continues and swelling continues to decrease. I was also told to eat/drink a lot slower, which I thought I was, but maybe I’m judging from my norm. I was told sip an ounce every 5-10 mins and when I eat pudding or yoghurt only fill a third to half a toddler spoonful. I go on purée 31st. Just waiting for the opportunity to mix it up.

Wow Missy. Is this "regular doctor" part of the bariatric team or is just a regular pcp? If not bariatric, maybe they don't understand why hubby MUST have water after 6pm, and possibly food/snacks after 6 also. Somehow that just doesn't seem possible to follow that time table after surgery.

She is the GP for the bariatric program. You see her for the monthly appts and almost all of the aftercare. He mentioned her weird, new "diet" rules to the office manager, who told him to only follow the nutritional advice of the nutritionist. But he suggested someone address this with the doctor, as many people would assume that she should be listened to over everyone.
