Another question

My wife and I retired about a year ago and had scheduled a cruise to Europe last April. We were allowed to reschedule and we booked it for end of August 2021. We were both scheduled to have gastric bypass surgery the first of April 2021. Due to Covid backlog they are unable to give us a tentative schedule at this point. Part of the dilemma is our insurance deductible will start over in October 2021. The additional cost to us would probably be 8 to 10K. Were not sure if they will allow us to postpone the cruise again, we will be checking into that option as well.

My question to all of you and I know everyone is different. What would be the minimum time we should allow between surgery and going on the Cruise with what you know post-op. Of course, we will ask the Dr. this question as well. My wife is 58 & I’m 60 and are fairly active.

I’m so grateful for all the feedback and information everyone here has shared with me and others as well. There have been so many questions answered I didn’t even know I had.

First I would check to see if your cruise can be postponed. Since you are not canceling and just rescheduling you might be able to do that. What cruise line and where were you going? I've taken quite a few cruises in my life, in fact my sister was treating my brother & his wife and myself & my husband to a cruise around the British Isles. That was scheduled for May of this year but she was able to cancel it without penalty and just hold it on a future cruise which hasn't been booked yet.

With all the uncertainties of Covid and its impact on the health care system and elective surgeries, my feeling is put that as your priority and once you are done with surgery book your cruise, if they will let you book at a later date as we did. The cruise for us will probably be spring of next year if I decide to still go. For now I'll be getting together with my family at a beach house on the Outer Banks in May. Can't wait! We will all have been fully vaccinated by then and looking forward to it!

I'm really glad you are getting a lot out of our group. I hope you stick around a while and share your knowledge with others as you go through your journey.

Thanks Judy

If we had surgery early June would that would be enough time to heal for the cruise at end of August? We have a full schedule next year and hoping to fit this in this year. But maybe your right it might be best to wait. I know the wife does not want to wait.

Viking they are good to deal with. This cruise is to 10 northern European countries, Russia and Iceland. We have enjoyed their cruises in the past their customer service is outstanding.

Hopefully they will allow us to extend our 2-year covid schedule delay.

Our cruise line is Viking as well! My sister is the one who books it, so of what she has told me. I didn't realize she already re-booked the British Isle Cruise for June 2022, I found out today! It will be my first time on Viking, but my sister has used them many times. In fact she may have done the cruise you are talking about.

It could be that you would be fine to go by August but I had some complications that really threw my recovery off and I know that wouldn't have been a possibility for me. Maybe some other people might be able to respond as to their recovery time.

Thanks Judy

Baring no issues you will be fine to go. 2 weeks post surgery i went on a weekend road trip and made it work. Ask your team if they would approve it however as they might have specific things they want you to do.

Also let your clinic know about the insurance resetting. Sometimes if they know this they will try to get people in before hand.
