Four weeks post surgery and having issues!

Hello everyone, I am new here and this is my first post. I found this group because I am hopeful I can get some insight from some of the more seasoned members.

My surgery (gastric Bypass) was four weeks ago this past Thursday. The surgery didn't go as smoothly as expected but that was due to complications with my gallbladder which was also removed. I had to spend an additional 2 days in the hospital but everything worked out well. I am not sure what is normal and what isn't but I am down 42 pounds in just over 4 weeks with a starting weight of 320.

My issue is I can eat and can barely drink, even after all of this time. I try and drink water and it just hurts right in the center of my sternum, I mean it is painful. I try my best to man up and drink my water anyways. It is even worse when I try and eat. I am pretty much only eating soups and protein shakes and the soups are primarily the broth with a few small bites of well-chewed up noodles or veggies. Three times in the past week it has hurt so bad that I started throwing up and just can't keep anything thicker than liquids down. The worst part is I have no energy and am so week that it is starting to affect me at work.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and have any advice they can provide?

Thanks

Greetings, I also had the gb out with my bypass. 4 weeks out I was still on the pureed diet, my program was really strict, which it kinda sounds like you're effectively on. My advice is to stay here. Your body is still healing. Make sure to take small sips with liquids. I'm 4 months out and if I take too big a drink of water it will hurt. Maybe the water will feel better going down if it is warm? Also make sure you do the popcicles and jello still as they count for liquids. Someone mentioned at my monthly group that they have green grapes every day to help with hydration.oh and also try smart water or they make "liquid iv " that helps your body stay hydrated. Good luck! If you're interested I was on liquid diet for 2 wks, pureed 3, soft 3, and then regular.

Thank you for your reply! I've not been told about popsicles, I assume I need to buy ones that are sugar-free? I am finding that if I take 30 minutes to drink a glass of water (8 oz) that I can drink it with very little pain, I just have to be careful about how much I swallow at once. I do love grapes as well and will have to try those, I tried watermelon last week and that didn't go very well.

I do have a question, I find that I have to belch after every sip of water, is that normal?

Thanks
BB

Yes on the sugar free popcicles! They are quite good actually. I hiccup sometimes after I drink. I think others burp though. It's just a reaction and it's different for everyone.its normal. I think it might lesson with time. For me, I also hiccup when I get full. That's my que to stop. I Hiccup before I feel the fullness actually!
