Hello, I am new to this group. I had gastric sleeve in February. I have lost 28 lbs since then. I know I could have lost a lot more of I could get my mind wrapped around eating to the rule. I struggle with this. I like veggies and I mean all like beans, peas, tomatoes and fruits which are also loaded with carbs. I am on the struggle bus when it comes to this. Especially when the fresh ones start coming in.. Anyone else with this problem?

Welcome to the group and congratulations on your weight loss! When I first started my weight loss journey and received the eating plan from my surgeon, I was shocked to realize that my diet was almost completely carbs . . . that and fried foods. I recommend using an app to track your food intake because creep happens . . . an extra bite of this, an extra scoop of that, a small snack on the way up to bed. It all adds up and until you enter it in a food tracker it does not seem like much.

There are 2 popular apps used by this group and in the bariatric community; Baritastic and MyFitnessPal.

Baritastic is the most bariatric-specific app, is heavily recommended by bariatric programs and tracks, protein, water, vitamins, measurements, weight and other items.

MyFitnessPal is one of the most widely known food trackers because of its massive food database and barcode scanner. Bariatric patients often use it for macro tracking, protein goals, exercise syncing and recipe building.

I have used MyFitnessPal for over 5 years and love it! I appreciate that I can go to the weight section and see every weight I recorded since starting and look at the graphed results. It shows you that weight loss is not simply a downward path but that there are many ups and downs over time. The only aspect of the app that bothers me is if you press the "complete day" button, you get a warning that your calories are “too low”. The minimum daily calories that the app accepts is 1200 but mine is 995 which was set by my nutritionist! The fix for this is just to not press that button which does not change any of the features or functionality. Although, when you can successfully press that button it gives you a message that if you repeat that same calorie intake for 5 weeks your weight would be XXX (calculated by the app.) It was a nice feature pre surgery and helped me to see how following the eating plan would benefit me long term, but I can certainly live without it now.

Welcome, LadyLovette,

I haven't had my surgery yet. I have been asking my medical team lots and lots of questions because I'm a vegetarian. They all keep saying to eat your protein first at every single meal, eat slowly, chew the food very well, be mindful of my meal as I eat it so I'll enjoy it more, and stop eating when I'm satisfied...not full.

So for those of us who love beans, legumes, berries, and fruits and vegetables, I think we can still eat those foods we enjoy, but we will eat and feel better if we prioritize our protein every time we eat. Moreover, we will enjoy those foods above, just less of them. And that's good...fewer carbs, sugars, and calories hopefully means smaller bodies.

be mindful of my meal as I eat it so I'll enjoy it more,
That's my favorite point in your post. People so often read the newspaper, watch t.v. or just zone out when eating, like they're trying to get it over with. One thing that helped me be mindful was putting down my fork or spoon between bites, and chewing well before picking them back up. It was a really hard habit to break.
