Hi, I'm new to the forum and my surgery is scheduled for 2/5/26. I'm on the fence about the gastric sleeve surgery. I'm 73 and been battling intergenerational obesity since my early 20's. My father and his mother both weighed over 500lbs. My brother and sister both super obese. Her children and grandchildren all obese. My adult children are normal weight, one of my granddaughters had the sleeve done in April and is doing well with it.

I have tried most everything to get to a manageable weight over the years. I lost 117lbs at age 64 and gained most of it back. Now at this stage, if I fall, I can't get up on my own. I haven't been able to walk my dog in over two years. I can't think of any alternatives that won't lead to regaining again. I don't think I could go through that failure again.

Needing help and support.

In my most recent visit to the surgeon, he is suggesting the bypass surgery rather than sleeve due to the potential for acid reflux. It seems more extensive surgery. I'm not sure how to proceed. Will follow up with his APN.

I understand being nervous about everything. I had gastric bypass and I'm really glad I did. There is a 2 week "diet" you will follow prior to the surgery. I know people will say it doesn't matter and only the last few matter. I didn't listen to those people. My surgeon explained it really helps prepare your body and it helps as you make this major life change. I am glad I followed it and I highly recommend you do too.

It is scary and the fear and not doing well is very real. All I can say is to take everything 1 step at a time and focus on the tasks at hand. It really can be worth it.
