No Weight Loss After Sleeve - What’s Wrong?

I was sleeved on 10/25 (5 days ago). All went well and I came home the next day. Minimal pain -have only used Tylenol for pain. No problem drinking water. “Meals” are 1-2 ounces, mostly dairy (cottage cheese or yogurt, egg salad) -tried chicken salad and it didn’t want to go down. I’m drinking protein shakes tho I hate them -get around 40-50g/day of protein. I’m averaging about 400 calories/day. . I have little to no hunger.

But I haven’t lost ANYthing since surgery. In fact, I’m 2-3# UP from where I was before surgery on Monday. I’ve read about people losing 10-20 lbs in their first two weeks after surgery. What’s WRONG with me?? Did I go through all this for nothing?

Had anybody heard of someone having the sleeve surgery who failed to lose weight?

Yes, your weight loss will happen, but each body heals and drops weight on its own schedule.

I'm curious about you eating solid foods this early after surgery before the sutures have healed. Did your bariatric team recommend these foods? This is not to be judgmental, and I definitely am not attempting to give you any kind of medical advice.

Please don't feel discouraged about not seeing weight loss this early. You have been through MAJOR surgery, and the weight will begin falling off soon.

It's not unusual for weight to increase or stay the same. Regardless of what the scale is reading right now, your body composition is changing. There is a ton of fluid in your body from what they pump into you during surgery and swelling, etc. It's unusual that you aren't on a liquid diet, so unlike most people, you probably aren't in ketosis. Most people coming out of surgery go into ketosis for the first couple of weeks while they are only consuming liquids and protein. This increases fluid output and a lot of people will drop a lot of water weight. When people start eating purees and soft foods they usually come out of ketosis and experience the "week 3-ish stall."

The bottom line is, it is incredibly rare, like lottery rare, for someone to not lose weight over time after surgery. Follow the guidelines given to you by the letter and make sure you are getting enough protein and hydration. Those two things are the most important during for first several weeks. Step away from the scale and just focus on doing everything right and making the protein/hydration goals. Once you get through your post op phase and back to creating "regular" foods, continue to focus on quality foods, protein and hydration. No matter how fast the weight comes off, if you make healthy choices good things will happen.

Stick with it! Good luck!
