I am having some doubts about getting the surgery, I know it will be better for me to do it. I guess I am worried about paying for it and if I can actually make the changes that I need to make. I was supposed to try and lose 20 pounds, but I can't seem to stick with the plan or move enough to get those pounds off. If anyone has any advice for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Peachy, I think we all had doubts prior to surgery. Think of it as stage-fright.

Being able to afford the surgery and being able to adjust to the changes in eating and behavior afterward are two very different things. I can't address your finances but wonder why it's an issue.

My surgeon also wanted me to lose some weight prior to the surgery; most surgeons will suggest that for a few reasons. One good reasons from the old days when it was an open procedure was so they'd have more room to move while incising tissue. But tens of thousands of people had similar fears and obstacles and still managed to get there. I only lost a few pounds because he managed to find a surgical date that was about a week later.

My advice would simply be to examine your feelings and make a decision, then stick to it, even if fears accompany it. It's not like reinventing the wheel. It's a surgery that's become as commonplace as any cosmetic procedure or tonsillectomy or bunion removal, etc. etc.

On the other hand, if you're feeling fearful, just don't do it. You can always change your mind now or later. I'm still thrilled, 20 years later, that I decided to do it, but that's me. I truly believe you need to feel committed to everything about the surgery before moving ahead with it. I'd suggest you talk to someone in the field where you would be having the surgery before you decide. You're in charge here.
